Search Like a Pro

This is part of an ongoing series where we'll highlight features of the StarCraft II community site. This time we're exploring one of the most useful tools on the community site: the search feature. Let's fire it up!

The search bar is easy to find. It's the white bar with a magnifying glass on it located in the upper right of your screen. To use the search feature, all you need to do is type in what you're looking for, then press enter or click the magnifying glass. That will take you to a results page dedicated to the subject of your search. Near the top it will list where you are searching. This will generally be 'All content,' possibly followed by the author if you've specified one, but we'll get to that later. Below that there are three 'sort by' options. This is where things start to get interesting. The search page lets you sort your results in three different ways:

· Relevance- Selecting this will sort your search results according to how closely they match your search terms.

· Date- This option will sort your search results according to the time they were posted. The most recent results will appear first.

· Popularity- This allows you to look for results matching your search parameters that have also proven popular among your peers.

The search results page also displays a series of tabs reflecting more specific categories within which to search. For example, a search for "Raynor" will yield several categories of information:

· All- Encompasses search results which could fall into all of the following categories.

· Article- This will return blog posts which include your search terms.

· Forums- This tab will show all forum threads related to your search results.

· Content- This will return content pages such as those found under the Game tab.

· Support- This will show any support articles that include the terms you're looking for.

Clicking one of these tabs will filter your results by that category, and you can freely click between them. So, if you were looking for a blog, you'd probably want to skip straight to results in the Article category. If you wanted to learn more about the valiant terran marines from the unit page, you might hit the Content category.

A seemingly innocent query could return an overwhelming swarm of possible destinations, and being able to sort and categorize your results might not be quite enough to see you to your target. If you're willing to put in a bit more work you can cut those results into chunks that are easier to swallow by modifying the search terms. These search prefixes represent some of the tools at your disposal:

Note: search prefixes are case sensitive. They should be typed exactly as they appear in bold below.

· author:You can create a search for posts and articles by a particular author. If you wanted to read things I've written, for example, you would search for author:Daxxarri. If you were searching for a fellow player, you'd want to include their character code, e.g. author:MisterFellow#042.

· content: If you want to specify a search for documents with a word in the body of the text, this is the signifier you would use. For example, a search for 'zerg' in the body of text would read content:zerg. If you don't specify a search prefix, content is the default prefix.

· forumId: Each of our forums has an ID number in its URL. You can create searches for content on specific forums by using this search prefix. If you wanted to specify the General Discussion forum you would use forumId:40568. The forum ID is the bold part of the URL: http:// us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/40568/.

· position: If you were looking for a specific forum post, you can specify only original posts by putting position:0 in your search terms.

· subject: This will search item titles. If you wanted to find something with the word protoss in the subject, you'd include subject:protoss in your search terms.

· topicId: If you wanted to search for content in a specific forum thread, you could use the topicId: search prefix. For example, topicId:85998600 would search our forum Guidelines thread -- its topic ID is listed in its URL: http:// us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/85998600.

· type: This search prefix lets you select what kind of documents you search for. You might want to look for information that's found solely in blogs. If you wanted to do that, you'd input type:article. If you wanted to search for a forum post, you would use type:post instead. There are other types as well, including kb and 'static.' The 'kb' type refers to our knowledge base articles. Static refers to pages that are more permanent fixtures on the website, like the unit overview (http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/game/unit/).

The search bar supports Boolean operations, which empowers you to search for multiple search terms simultaneously and in concert. So let's say that you're a zerg player looking for strategies to defeat terran mech armies, you could simply type mech + zerg into the search bar. It might be useful to get more specific, though. Instead, you could search for the first post of forum threads that are about mech and have zerg in the body. Such a search would look like this: type:post + subject:mech + content:zerg. Such a search might help narrow your results and leave you with less to sort through.

Ideally, you won't have to use these more advanced search features to find the information that you're looking for, but when you do, we hope that you find our search to be a powerful, complete, and useful tool that will take you straight to the information you're looking for.

If you've given it a spin, let us know what you think of the search feature in the comments

Matchmaking and Ladder Improvements

Matchmaking and Ladder Improvements

As part of our continuing efforts to ensure fair matches and an enjoyable ladder system, we've identified and recently addressed three notable issues through hotfixes:

Improved Matchmaking for Teams
While the matchmaking system as a whole is looking very strong, one area we identified for improvement was matchmaking for arranged teams that were still in placement matches. We found these first few matches for arranged teams were giving them an unfair advantage against their opponents. Since so many new arranged teams were being created every day, this was resulting in a noticeable amount of imbalanced matches for team games. The corrections we've made should show an improvement for many team players, especially in the sub-Gold leagues.

Improved Placement for Teams
Another related issue we've received feedback on and experienced firsthand is the difficulty of placing in a high league while in an arranged team. We made two changes that should improve the experience. 1) The improved matchmaking mentioned above will help teams find opponents of similar skill sooner and, as a result, help to more quickly place teams in the league in which they belong. 2) We also found we were being too conservative in how teams were being placed in leagues and have made some adjustmentsto allow teams to be more easily placed in higher leagues. 3v3 random and arranged teams will likely notice this change the most.

Team Matchmaking Improvements
We found conditions where the matchmaking system was forcing certain teams and players to wait longer than needed for team matches. Those conditions have been addressed and the wait times should be reduced without affecting the quality of the matchmaking.

We're continuing to monitor the matchmaking system on all levels, reading feedback, and playing the game ourselves to ensure that it's providing a fair and fun system for players of all skill levels. Please let us know if you have any additional feedback or have already noticed some improvement from these changes by posting here.

Blizzard Would Do A 'StarCraft' Movie If James Cameron Is Interested - MTV

Blizzard bi bio zainteresovan da snimi StarCraft film ako bi James Cameron bio zainteresovan... e to već zvuči interesantno!

Blizzard has always been a cinematic game developer. Its focus on storytelling and cutscenes (both in-engine and out) is undeniable, with Hollywood-quality tales of heroism, revenge and war. Way back in 2006, Blizzard announced that it was working with Legendary Pictures to make a live-action movie set in the "WarCraft" universe, and last year it was announced that Sam Raimi would be directing the film. Rob Pardo, the EVP of Game Design at Blizzard recently spoke to me about the progress of the "WarCraft" film and whether Blizzard has any other Hollywood aspirations for its franchises.

Regarding the "WarCraft" movie, Pardo said that there's not a whole lot to report on at the moment. "We're still super excited about it," he said, "but it's still in that story-development phase."

With the success of "StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty" it certainly makes you wonder whether other Blizzard franchises might make it to the silver screen. Pardo said that the company has always wanted to go this route with its franchises, but that they really need to find the right production team for project.

"We've always had an interest in seeing our stuff on film or TV. It's just tricky to find the right partners. We probably could have made a ['StarCraft'] movie or something on TV years and years ago, but it's really important to us that we find creative people that are really talented but also really excited about our properties. That's always been the challenge for us. I think if Jim Cameron came to us tomorrow and said, 'You want to make a 'StarCraft' movie?' we'd probably sign that."

Pardo went on to emphasize that, with the "World of WarCraft" movie, Blizzard found such a partnership. "That's why we did the 'WoW' movie. We were really excited about being involved with Legendary Pictures, who we thought had a really good track record with these sorts of movies that would make sense for our franchises."

So, James Cameron, ball's in your court! If you need contact info for the Blizzard folks, just let me know. I'd be happy to hook you up.
